The Governments of the Republic of Malawi and the United Republic of Tanzania intend to build a 180.2 megawatts Lower Songwe Dam and Hydropower Plant (LSD & HPP) along the Songwe River.
The Songwe river forms part of the border between Malawi and Tanzania and drains its water into Lake Nyasa/Malawi. The river is characterized by meandering and course changes at the lower basin which cause flooding, land loss, and eventually change in nationalities status to surrounding communities as the river is part of the border reference between the two countries.
The Governments of the Republic of Malawi and the United Republic of Tanzania have determined to address the challenges within the basin through construction of three dams across the Songwe river, one of them being the Lower Songwe Dam and Hydropower Plant (LSD&HPP). The dam is expected to assist in controlling floods downstream of the Songwe River Basin and mitigate the effects of shifting of the course of the river.
