OUTAGE OF TEDZANI IV FOR MAINTENANCE WORKS
The Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) is informing the public and all stakeholders that it will carry out maintenance works on its machine at Tedzani IV. Due to Cyclone ANA, rock boulders went into the tailrace (water exit channel from the machine). This has made it impossible to close the water channel when we want to dewater the machine during maintenance or during an emergency.
The works will therefore involve building an isolating wall around the mouth of the exit channel to create a dry working area to facilitate removal of the rock boulders. The works are coinciding with a one-year anniversary of the machine’s commissioning and will enable the Tedzani IV Project Consultants (TEPSCO) and contractors carry out contractual machine inspection and warranty repairs during the same period.
As such, EGENCO will shut down Tedzani IV (19.1MW) from Monday 25 April 2022 from 08:00Hrs to Friday, 29 April 2022 – 17:00Hrs for the said critical works.
In order to minimize the impact of the outage and inconvenience to the public, available diesel generators will be in use to supplement the available hydropower station. We have also recommissioned one machine at TEDZANI II which was undergoing rehabilitation works since December 2021. This has brought back 10MW and has therefore reduced the capacity being removed.
EGENCO sincerely regrets any inconveniences this outage may cause.
