OFFICIAL COMMISSIONING OF 1MW LIKOMA SOLAR POWER PLANT
The Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) wishes to inform the general public and its stakeholders that it will officially commission the One Megawatt (1 MW) solar power plant for Likoma island on Monday, 16th November 2020 following successful completion of the project.
The commissioning ceremony will take place at Likoma and will be graced by the Minister of Energy, Honorable Newton Kambala.
Construction of the solar power plant started in August 2019 with the aim of increasing power supply to the island. It is part of a 3.1 MW Hybrid Power Plant comprising of 1.8 MW diesel generators and 1.3 MW solar power. The 1.8 MW diesel generators component was commissioned in December 2019.
The commissioning of the solar power plant entails that solar has become the main source of power for the island while the diesel generators will serve as a backup power. This will enable EGENCO to reduce on fuel costs.
The solar power plant has a battery storage facility that enables it to operate for three days on battery storage power alone. This guarantees stable power supply for the islands, 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week.
