MAINTENANCE WORKS AT NKULA POWER STATION

MAINTENANCE WORKS AT NKULA POWER STATION

The Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) is informing all stakeholders and the general public that it will carry out planned maintenance works at its Nkula Power Station on Sunday, 17 November 2024, from 5 O’clock in the morning to 5 O’clock in the evening. The works will involve repairing of a damaged spillway gate and installation new fine trash screens at the power station’s intake. The works are in preparation for the upcoming rainy season.

To conduct the maintenance works, EGENCO will lower the dam at its Nkula Power Station intake to allow for a safe working environment of its divers, welders and engineers. Consequently, EGENCO will not be able to generate electricity at its Nkula Power Station. As such, 135MW from both Nkula A and Nkula B Power Plants will not be available to the national grid. Power generation at Tedzani and Kapichira Power Stations will also be affected due to the reduced water discharge.

To mitigate the impact of the reduced power generation, EGENCO will operate all its available diesel generators to supplement the available hydro capacity.

EGENCO sincerely regrets any inconvenience that these maintenance works may cause.
