GOVERNMENT TO SUPPORT WOVWE UPGRADING
The Government of Malawi will play a huge role to ensure that Wovwe Power Station is upgraded to double its power generation capacity from 4.5MW to 9MW. The Minister of Energy, Hon. Newton Kambala said this during his tour of the Power Station on Thursday, 20th August 2020.
While stating many ways in which the government supports the development of projects, the Minister said government is committed to ensure that the project is realized as soon as possible. “Government will ensure that the upgrading of Wovwe happens quickly enough to help Malawi get the power it requires as the country is experiencing deficits in power generation.” Said the Minister.
On his part, Chief Executive Officer for Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO), William Liabunya, said the upgrading of the power station should be completed between 2023/2024. Currently, the company is reviewing a feasibility study report for the upgrading works.
Located in the Northern region of Malawi, Wovwe Power Station is designed to either connect to the national grid or operate on its on as off grid.. When operated off the grid, the power station is capable of supplying power to Karonga and Chitipa Districts.
It is expected that once the upgrade works are completed, the power station will supply half of the power needed by the whole of the Northern Region, which, currently stands at 20MW.
