EGENCO DONATES 5, 100 KGs OF OXYGEN GAS TO PUBLIC HOSPITALS
The Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) has donated MK30 million worth 5, 100kgs of oxygen gas, that could fill up to 500 of 10.2kgs of oxygen gas cylinders, to public hospitals across the country to be used in treating covid-19 patients.
Speaking at the handover ceremony at Zomba State Lodge Field Hospital, EGENCO’s CEO, William Liabunya, said that as an organization, they felt compelled to supplement government’s efforts in fighting the pandemic.
He further said that fighting covid-19 is not the responsibility of government alone and encouraged fellow corporate players to support the fight against covid-19.
“It is good that we as a company supplement government’s efforts to contain the Corona Virus. We are doing this because we appreciate the role our health sector plays in the fight against the pandemic.” Said Liabunya.
Receiving the donation on behalf of public hospitals, the Minister of Health, Hon. Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, acknowledged that oxygen has been a challenge in public hospitals.
“One of the main challenges is that patients have been having problems breathing due to lack of oxygen. Therefore, we are grateful for the donation that EGENCO has made.” Said Honorable Chiponda.
She further said that Zomba Hospital will benefit greatly from the donation as they do not have an oxygen plant of their own.
This was the second donation that EGENCO has made towards the fight against covid-19. Previously, the organization donated K8.5 million worth of covid-19 materials to Chikwawa, Neno, Mzuzu and Karonga districts.
