DEPUTY US AMBASSADOR TO MALAWI VISITS KAPICHIRA POWER STATION

The Deputy United States of America (USA) Ambassador to Malawi, Amy Diaz, visited Kapichira Power Station on Tuesday, 4th July 2023, to appreciate the effects of climate change on power generation and how EGENCO has recovered following the damage of Kapichira by Tropical Cyclone Anna in January 2022.

The Deputy Ambassador said the USA government is looking at ways to help with climate change resiliency in power generation.

Kapichira Power Station was out of operation since January 2022 after its dam structures were severely damaged by Cyclone Ana, taking 129.6 Megawatts (MW), about 23% of the country’s power capacity, away from the grid.

The Station has since May 2023 been restored following completion of initial rehabilitation works aimed at restoring power generation. It is now undergoing a second phase of rehabilitation works aimed at enhancing the resiliency of the Power Station’s infrastructure to effects of climate change.
