REDUCED POWER SUPPLY AT LIKOMA AND CHIZUMULU ISLANDS DUE TO FUEL SHORTAGES

The Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) is informing its customers and stakeholders at Likoma and Chizumulu Islands that there will be reduced power supply at the Islands from 5th November 2024 due to fuel shortages for operating its diesel power plants.

EGENCO uses diesel power plants to supplement the solar power system, which it uses to provide electricity to the Islands. The Company requires a minimum of 10, 000 liters of diesel every two weeks for normal operations at both Islands. However, due to fuel shortages, the Company has been able to secure only 4, 000 liters.

In order to manage its fuel reserves, EGENCO has reduced the operating hours of its diesel power plants at Likoma and Chizumulu Islands. Consequently, EGENCO’s customers at Likoma Island will not have power supply for 6 hours every day, from 00:00am (midnight) to 06:00am while its customers at Chizumulu Island will not have power supply for 9 hours 30 minutes every day from 12:30pm to 02:00pm, and also from 10:00pm to 06:00am. This arrangement will persist until normal fuel supply resumes.

EGENCO sincerely regrets any inconvenience that may be caused due to the reduced power supply.
