REDUCED POWER GENERATION AT KAPICHIRA POWER STATION DUE TO FAULTY SPILLWAY GATE

The Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) is informing its stakeholders and the general public that it experienced reduced power generation capacity at its Kapichira Power Station due to a punctured hydraulic pipe on one of its spillway gates at the power station’s intake.

The fault occurred while in the process of releasing and controlling trash that was gathering in the pond at the intake. Upon completion of the exercise, one of the spillway gates could not close completely. This resulted into the spilling of more water from the intake, reducing the amount of water available for power generation.

Consequently, this resulted into the shutting down of three power generation units out of the four that are available at the power station. This therefore, reduced the overall power generated from the power station and that may have affected power supply to some customers in the night of 17 November 2021

EGENCO is however pleased to advise its stakeholders and the general public that its team of engineers at Kapichira Power Station worked throughout the night and we had the problem resolved quick enough.

EGENCO sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused.
