EGENCO ENROLLS FEMALE STUDENTS INTO ITS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME, EXTENDS SUPPORT TO 5 BOYS

In a bid to encourage involvement of female students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), EGENCO has enrolled 10 female students from Nkula and 10 Female Students from Chikwawa Community Day Secondary Schools (CDSS) into its scholarship programme. This was revealed at a handover ceremony of school amenities to Nkula CDSS where among other things EGENCO donated calculators, school shoes, sanitary pads, pens and soap.

EGENCO’s Chief Executive Officer, William Liabunya, said the company is committed to supporting the government and the schools to ensure that female students excel in their education.

“We are committed to supporting the students throughout, from secondary school, college and even offer them employment afterwards. We would be very pleased to see some of them become engineers and  work at our company,” Said Liabunya.

Liabunya further noted that supporting the girl child does not mean leaving behind the boy child. As such, he disclosed that the company has extended the scholarship to five male students.

Speaking on behalf of her fellow students, Tiyeze Mwalilino, a beneficiary of the scholarship, thanked EGENCO saying the students are now able to see a bright future. This was reiterated by her head teacher, Grace Utumbe, who said, “the support will motivate the female students and encourage them to work hard and also to remain in school.”

Nkula Community Day Secondary School was built with support from Nkula Power Station, one of the power stations belonging to EGENCO. It has approximately 150 students.
