Malawi, the Warm Heart of Africa, through the Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) will be hosting the 2019 African Hydro Symposium from 8 to 10 October 2019 in Blantyre.
This Symposium is held annually and is a forum where Hydro Power Plant Operating Personnel, representing electricity utilities and Independent Power Producers (IPP’s) from Africa, meet to share experiences and deliberate on development, operation, maintenance and management of hydro power plants.
The vision of the African Hydro Symposium (AHS) is that of becoming an internationally recognized body of hydro expertise, with the objective being to facilitate technical interaction to enhance Hydro Plant Performance for the mutual benefit of the participating utilities and IPPs.
The Hydro Symposium was launched in 1988 as a meeting of Eskom Hydro Plant Operators; this was extended in 1990 to include Hydro Operating Personnel representing electricity utilities, and IPP’s from Southern Africa. Delegates meet once a year to transfer technical knowledge, discuss specific hydro challenges and propose/craft solutions. As a result, technical contacts are made and friendships forged. The unique nature of the forum allows networking and identification of experts that prove useful in working around current or future challenges utilities may encounter. Due to the continued growth in representation, this body then changed its name to African Hydro Symposium. Over the years’ participant also include members from the COMESA region.
Other than various power utilities in Africa, the Symposium also attracts international participation from various energy sectors and equipment manufacturers and suppliers. Malawi once hosted the symposium with ESCOM as host in the year 2012 and this year it will be the second time for the country to host. The Secretariat of AHS is at Kafue Gorge Regional Training Centre in Zambia.
To facilitate technical interaction for the enhancement in hydro plant performance, for the mutual benefit of the participating utilities and IPP’s.
This year’s theme for the African Hydro Symposium is Quality Power for Sustainable Development in Africa
Approximately 200 delegates from power utilities are expected to attend the Symposium.
