The Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) would like to inform the public and all its stakeholders that it will, from Monday 20th August 2018 (00.00 hours) to Thursday 20th December 2018 (17:00 hours), shutdown its Tedzani III Unit 5 in order to carry out major rehabilitation, modernisation and uprating works.

The main works to be carried out will involve turbine rehabilitation, modernisation of machine controls, upgrading of excitation systems, and upgrading of generator and generator transformer. These works will result in obtaining additional 5 megawatts (MW) to the current 26 MW to the machine. This means that once the works are completed the machine will now have 31 MW capacity and will become more efficient and reliable.

With this shutdown, EGENCO generation capacity will initially be reduced by this unit’s capacity of 26 MW. However, the public may wish to know that currently Tedzani I&II machines with capacity of 30MW are mostly at standstill due to inadequate water in-flow in the Shire River. We will therefore be running the Tedzani I & II machines and be supplying a total of 30 MW. We will also be running the peaking diesel engines during peak demand hours. We therefore assure the public and all stakeholders that power supply to ESCOM will not be significantly affected and there is therefore no need for the public to panic.

The public may further wish to know that this is the first major rehabilitation and modernisation work to be carried out on this machine ever since the unit was commissioned in 1995. According to hydro power machines operating standards rehabilitation works have to be carried out after 15 to 20 years of operations and therefore this shutdown is very necessary to ensure the machine is up to date with technology and restore its efficiency and reliability. The total project cost is MK6.2 billion and EGENCO is financing the project on its own.

EGENCO remains committed to ensure that it operates all its power stations in the most efficient, sustainable and responsible manner. We will ensure that these works are carried out in a manner that it will not adversely affect the power supply to ESCOM.

EGENCO sincerely regret any inconveniences that this very crucial shutdown and rehabilitation works may cause.
