EGENCO’s 20 Megawatts Diesel Generators destined for Mapanga in Blantyre arrived in the country on Wednesday 14 March 2018. Installation for the same has since commenced. There are 10 generators each producing 2 Megawatts and it is expected that the diesel generators will be commissioned by end of April 2018.
Unlike the Mzuzu generators, that were commissioned by EGENCO in December 2017 and January 2018 respectively, the Mapanga generators are not containerized. They will be housed in a diesel generator Power House currently in its final stages of construction. The generators have been procured by EGENCO from Techfab International and are not leased. The engines were manufacture in Japan and the transformers in India. It is expected that after commissioning, the power situation in the country will continue to improve.
The Board of Directors for EGENCO Limited on Wednesday 14 March 2018 toured some of the projects that currently EGENCO is implementing to improve the power situation in the country. Among others, the Board visited Nkula A rehabilitation, modernization and upgrading project which is being financed by the US government through the MCA Malawi Compact.
The Board also toured the River training (diversion of a tributary which was depositing silt at the Tedzani Pond) and the expansion of the Tedzani pond projects. Principal Secretary (PS) for Energy Patrick Matanda who is a member of the Board said he is impressed with the projects and said once the projects are completed they will improve power production in the country.
