The work to install and commission EGENCO’s 20 Megawatts Diesel Generators Peaking Plant at Mapanga in Blantyre is progressing well. The contractor is currently finalizing the civil works. The generators are expected to be commissioned by end of June 2018 to add 20 megawatts to the national grid. There are 10 generators each with capacity of 2 Megawatts.
The generators have been procured by EGENCO from Techfab International and are not leased. The engines were manufactured in Japan and the transformers in India. It is expected that after commissioning, the power situation in the country will continue to improve.
Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited joined the rest of Nation in celebrating Labour Day. The national event was held at Masintha Ground in Lilongwe with Minister of Labour, Youth, Sport and Manpower Development Honorable Francis Kasaira as the Guest of Honor. EGENCO mounted a pavilion at the event and participated in the march from Lilongwe Town Hall to Masintha Ground.
The newly commissioned Weed Harvesters will go a long way in improving the generation of hydro-electricity power in the county. The weed harvesters are used to remove aquatic weeds, mainly Namasupuni, at Liwonde in order to ensure that the weeds do not reach the Power Stations (Nkula, Tedzani and Kapichira) cascaded downstream of Shire River and damage machines.
