EGENCO CEO William Liabunya present a gift to one of the outstanding students as Dr Mathews Mtumbuka looks on.

The Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) has challenged fresh graduate engineers to bring in sustainable innovations and technology to solve some of the problems that the country is experiencing.

EGENCO Chief Executive Officer, William Liabunya, made the call on Friday 9 November 2018, when he graced the 2018 University of Malawi, Polytechnic Engineers Symposium, a gathering of final year students who will be graduating next year.

“All over the world, Engineers are known as problems solvers. We exist to find solutions that our societies are facing. Engineers exist to make life better. Engineers exist to simplify life”, Engineer Liabunya said.

Commenting on the symposium theme, Liabunya said, “the theme is challenging us young graduates to think outside the box to come up with better and improved engineering solutions that are sustainable for the development of our nation.”

Liabunya further commended some of the graduating students who have already shown their engineering ingenuity by developing useful items such as the mosquito killer device.

Among other notable speakers at the symposium, which is aimed at preparing the graduating students for the industry ahead of them, and linking them up with the industry for potential recruitment, were Dean for the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. G. Gamula; Symposium Patron & Deputy Dean, Dr. Kuotcha; Engineer Dr. Mathews Mtumbuka and representatives of various companies.

A total 57 student engineers are expected to graduate from the 2013 class.
