Senior Administration and Gender Officer, Doreen Kavala poses with the girls at MUST

The Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) has sponsored 10 secondary school girls to participate in this year’s Girls Science Camp at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Ndata, Thyolo. The Camp is running from 19 August – to 28 August 2018.

According to MUST, the Camps are organised against a background of very few girls opting for science and technology related programmes in higher education institutions in Malawi, which is also reflected at MUST. The Camp is therefore one initiative aimed at motivating and inspiring the girls to pursue science and technology related fields.

EGENCO is an equal opportunity employer but it has very few female engineers at its power stations. EGENCO is currently in a drive to encouraging women to participate in science and engineering courses so that they could at one point join into engineering fields and into electricity generation. With the establishment of a Gender Inclusion Department, we expect that we would partner with such institutions that can help in development of women’s participation in Mathematics, Science and Engineering.
