The construction of Tedzani IV hydropower plant at Tedzani Power Station was officially launched on 4 July 2018. Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Honorable Aggrey Masi presided over the launch of the construction project for the 19.5 megawatt power plant.
In his remarks, the Minister thanked the Japanese Government for the timely assistance. He said the 19.5 megawatt will go a long way in helping Malawi to deal with power shortage that the country is experiencing. The minister further said government is committed to address the power challenges in the country and that in the medium to long term the matter of power shortages will be dealt with.
In her remarks, the Japanese Ambassador to Malawi, Her Excellency Ambassador Kae YANAGISAWA said the Japanese Government will continue to support Malawi to address the power challenges amongst other infrastructural challenges. She said as far as her government is concerned development from the grassroots can only be meaningful if availability and access to power is achieved.
The construction works for Tedzani IV will be done by Mitsubishi Corporation as main contractor with Calik Enerji as the sub-contractor. It is expected that the project will be completed in 39 months and will be ready by December 2020. The project is funded by the Japanese Government through a JPY5,772,000,000 (USD 52 million) grant. There was a financing shortfall of about USD4 million, which EGENCO is financing as a contribution to meet most of the local materials costs like cement, and reinforcement bars.
