The Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) has now fully commissioned the 6 Megawatt Diesel Power Plant at Luwinga in Mzuzu. Speaking to the media after commissioning the Generators, EGENCO Chief Executive Officer, William Liabunya assured the nation that EGENCO is working tirelessly to implement programmes that will completely end the electricity blackouts.
“We will continue to implement projects; both short term, like diesel engines, and long term projects such as diversifying our power sources so that the blackouts should be history in Malawi” Said Liabunya. The diesel engines will normally be running for 4 hours during peak demand periods (2hours in the morning and 2hrs in the evening) to supplement the hydro power. However, the engines will run outside these times whenever there is power shortage or total blackouts. The first machine was commissioned on 31st December 2017 as had been planned and the last machine was commissioned on Monday January 8, 2018 way ahead of the 16th January planned deadline.
