Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) is a company that generates electricity in Malawi. It was incorporated under the Companies Act (Cap 46:03) of the Laws of Malawi on 7th September 2016. It started its operations on 1st January 2017.
The Kapichira Hydro-electric Power Station is located at the Kapichira Falls, formerly known as the Livingstone Falls; named after the all-great Scottish Missionary, Dr. David Livingstone, who once passed through these falls.
Nkula Power Station is the first major hydro power station in Malawi. It comprises of Nkula A with 3 machines, each rated 8MW, and Nkula B with 5 machines, each rated 20MW. The last machine in Nkula A was commissioned in 1966 where as the last machine in Nkula B was commissioned in 1992.
Due to increased demand of electricity in the country coupled with limited generation capacity in the hydro power stations, EGENCO runs Diesel power plants in order to suffices demand during peak periods.
